Piedmont Park Conservancy is hosting our first Homeschool Day for Field Trips!
Students will come together for a day full of unique, engaging, educational opportunities. We will be offering two STEM focused field trips, sure to captivate homeschool students of all ages.
- Buzz on Bees (Primary): K- 2nd grade
Explore our teaching apiary and learn all about the characteristics, life-cycle, and importance of honey bees. Through hands-on activities, students will explore the process of plant pollination and how bees make honey. Students will be able to identify the structure of a beehive by designing and engineering a honeycomb of hexagons. Furthermore, the program will explain what keeps a beekeeper busy as well as why we should “bee” aware around stinging insects. GSE:, SKL1, SKL2a,c, MGSEK.CC.4-6, MGSEK.NBT.1, MGSEK.G1-6, S1L1(c), MGSE1.G.1-2, MGSE1.NBT.2, MGSE1.NBT.2, S2L1a,c,d ,S2E3, MGSE2.NBT.2, MGSE2.NBT.5, MGSE2.G.1
- Erosion 101: 3rd-5th grade
Conduct a hands-on investigation of wind and water erosion, and how these processes slowly shape Earth’s changing surface. Students, as small group scientists and engineers, will carry out a cause and effect investigation, analyze data, use math skills to measure/record changes, and construct an argument based on evidence. Students engineer their own solutions to determine, as a whole group, the best methods for controlling erosion.
