We’re having a heat wave… a tropical heat wave.
You may have noticed the weather has been pretty near blazing lately. As the mercury rises, your first response may be to turn down the thermostat and chill in the air conditioning.  But if you have children in your life, this is much easier said than done.  Kids want to be outside in the summer, and with the right equipment and preparation, they can enjoy the weather safely.  Be sure to stay hydrated.  By the time you are thirsty, you’re already somewhat dehydrated. Keep yourself healthy by drinking water as often as possible and leave sugary and caffeinated drinks for days when you won’t be in the sun. Wear cool, loose fitting clothing and be sure to apply sunscreen when you know you will be spending time outdoors. If you’re swimming to beat the heat, remember to reapply sunscreen afterward to ensure you’re covered.  Listen to your body. If you start to feel dizzy or ill while outside, go indoors and cool down.

Cooling in the shade.

When visiting green spaces like Piedmont Park, take advantage of the natural cooling capabilities of trees.  In the shade, the temperature can be as much as 10 degrees lower.  Explore the cool and breezy front lawn at Piedmont Park. This area, which is less traveled by park visitors, is a great spot to beat the heat on the summer’s warmest days.

Cooling in the pool.

If you’re combating warm weather cabin fever, remember that it’s not too late to enroll the kids in your life in EnviroVentures Summer Day Camp. Our campers get to enjoy all the park has to offer-from swimming in the pool, to age appropriate activities indoor and out.  Summer may be halfway through, but summer camp still has worlds of fun in and out of the sun to offer here at Piedmont Park.
