Preserving food was a way of life for generations gone by. Piedmont Park Conservancy is happy to say its back and it’s better than ever in the Park. Now you can preserve foods that respect your preferences for healthy, local and sustainable products, supporting local farmers and green markets – with no preservatives or artificial colors.
Did you know canning is not just for summer fruits and vegetables? There’s a full array available in every season – for a full year’s calendar of preserved foods! And it’s not limited to jams and jellies, or pickles – there are so many uses and a variety of ideas for preserved products that will enhance your daily menu choices… well, you’ll see!
Canning in jars workshops will teach all the basics as well as the full range of products that can be safely water-bath preserved. Detailed instruction along with hands-on involvement is provided.
All workshops will be conducted by Lyn Deardorff, a forty-year canner. Lyn holds a Serve Safe Food Safety Certificate and has worked in various capacities in the Food Industry. She has also received approval from the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture to process jarred food products in the past for public consumption.
You will receive a notebook with recipes and full instruction in canning along with tips and guidelines. Three products will be canned: a fruit, a pickle, and a tomato-based product which will be chosen according to the season. You will leave with the knowledge to do home-based canning on your own and will have 3 jarred preserved products at the end of the workshop. All supplies are included. $75.00 for the complete workshop.
