Mama was born in the kitchen of my Silverlake apartment during my 8 year stint in Los Angeles as a film industry freelancer. Between jobs, I had a lot of extra time on my hands and the inability to sit still for long. Part wannabe hippie, part aspiring entrepreneur, I ordered a bunch of natural raw ingredients, turned my kitchen into a workshop, and started experimenting. The minute I made oil and water combine, I was hooked.
Mama officially launched in September of 2004, and is now happily based in Atlanta, Ga. It is a culmination of almost 3 years of research and development, and a life-long love of body products. A lot of people ask if my workshop is like a lab, but really, it’s more like a kitchen. It is stocked full of raw ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, herbs and essential oils, and is packed with kitchen utensils like blenders, grinders, mixers and measuring spoons. I formulate, manufacture, pour and package every batch by hand. I produce my own labels, design my own website, write my own copy and keep my own books. Mama is more than just a business for me. It’s a lifestyle, a way to keep myself inspired.

We make our soap using traditional methods, but with modern precision instruments for weighing and measuring the ingredients. In other words, these are old-fashioned lye soaps, but they are the opposite of harsh. We keep the batch size small, and we select our ingredients based on quality and the properties they contribute to the soap and to your skin. All our soaps contain coconut, palm and castor oils, and a high percentage of olive oil. Olive oil is an extravagant ingredient in health and beauty products. Its price is on the rise, but we haven’t substituted yet because it adds such mildness to the soap. We choose coconut oil to produce good lather and for its cleaning power. Palm oil produces a hard bar. Castor oil stabilizes the lather and is very mild as well. All the soaps are super-fatted, meaning that there are more oil molecules than lye molecules available. That extra percentage of oil will leave your skin moisturized. We hand cut the slabs of soap and cure them for weeks before wrapping and labeling them.
