Swimming has been a favorite activity in Piedmont Park since before the park’s first bathhouse was built in 1911. In 1973, a swimming pool was built and swimming in the lake was banned.

"During my childhood in the early 1970s, Piedmont Park was one big, everlasting festival. There was the old swimming pool and bathhouse where me and my brother Bird swam in the summer, diving off the platforms and slipping down the giant metal slides into the water. It was where we learned to play."
